Gamecube Controller Surprise Announcment

A GameCube Controller Adapter is coming to Wii U to be used with Super Smash Bros. It also appears that Nintendo will release new GameCube controllers with a Smash Bros. logo on them, too.

The controller adapter will allow four GameCube controllers to be plugged into a USB-powered device. The adapter, however, will take up both of the front USB ports on the Wii U.

It is unknown if this device will only work with Super Smash Bros., but it seems likely that the addition of this device could open the way for GameCube controller functionality in Virtual Console games.

Top 2 players determined by score advance from each match to the next round

We are also going to be running a concurrent Fan Favorite bracket during the event. This Fan Favorite bracket is completely separate from the Invitational Tournament. To gain entry into the Fan Favorite bracket, players from the Invitational need to be voted in by the audience as a Fan Favorite. At the end of each Quarterfinal and Semifinal match of the Invitational, members of the audience will be encouraged to hold up character cards provided by Nintendo to vote on the player they feel performed with the most heart, courage, creativity, and style. The player that gets the most votes from the crowd wins a spot in the Fan Favorite Bracket.

In the Fan Favorite bracket matches, the highest scoring winner will advance to the next round. A second player will advance based on a fan vote. The objective for the players in this bracket is not only to win, but to do their best to win the hearts and votes of the fans.

New Miiverse Update

Set favourite posts and 'Yeah' comments

Miiverse, Nintendo's continually evolving bespoke social network, has had another update applied today. This time around there are improvements — at least we think they are — to all three versions across Wii U, 3DS and web browsers.

To start with, there's now a revamped User Page, with the User Menu of before now relegated to sub-menu status, while you can now also give 'Yeah' votes to comments on posts; if someone makes a witty remark in response to your musings or drawings, you can now show your approval. A neat feature on the Wii U and 3DS, meanwhile, is that you can set hand-written or drawn posts as a favourite, and they'll then be displayed in your updated User Page profile — ideal for sharing a drawing of which you're particularly proud, for example.
The official post:
There has been an update to Miiverse today.

1) (For Wii U and Nintendo 3DS only)
We have replaced the User Menu in the menu bar with an option called "User Page", which leads to a new and refurbished profile.
For example, you can now display a favourite handwritten post in your profile. Just select any one of your old handwritten posts, touch the spanner icon, then select "Set as Favourite Post" and it will appear in your profile! If you later want to remove it, you can do so from the Profile Settings in the User Page.
By the way, the User Menu is now accessible from within the User Page.

2) (For all versions of Miiverse)
It's now possible to give a Yeah to comments, as well as to posts. You can also touch or click on a comment to see some of the people who gave it a Yeah.
That's it for today!

"We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games," reads the post. "We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don’t have anything to announce."

CAPCOM Games Affected

Lost Planet 3 (PC/PS3): Migration to a new service has already begun, so we're not anticipating any online downtime. Flock! (All Versions): Same as Age of Booty; there are no plans to migrate this title. You can still download and play the game, but be aware online features - such as the level editor sharing function - will no longer be active.

Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition: Already migrated and there are no issues.

Miyamoto heads Gamepad initiative

Since the launch of the Wii U in November of 2012, Nintendo has had a very hard time conveying the value of the Gamepad to consumers. With the company entering another year at a loss in profits they have decided to develop software and experiences only possible on the Wii U and Gamepad. A unique problem calls for the best of the best. Shigeru Miyamoto is the lead designer and director that is leading a team to create several titles that will realize the full potential of the Gamepad. What they have been working on will be revealed at E3 this year. Some concepts are nearly completed games while others will convey their uniqueness via demos. Either way Nintendo is looking at E3 2014 as a new start for Wii U.

Financial Results Briefing for Fiscal Year Ended March 2014 May 8, 2014

 http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/140508/04.html

Financial Results Briefing
for Fiscal Year Ended March 2014
May 8, 2014

Highlights:
To establish new and growing areas through the active utilization of character IP, it is important for Nintendo to take risks ourselves and come up with interesting ways to use our character IP.

In other words, other than using character IP in Nintendo’s video game software, we need to start a new business that will someday become one of our core activities.

As Nintendo’s first step we have decided to release character figurines with built-in NFC functionality that are compatible with video games starting from this year-end sales season.

We are calling the figurines by their development codename, NFP, which comes from “NFC Featured Platform” and “Nintendo Figurine Platform.”

What is especially unique about NFP is that it is not classed as an accessory product of a certain software title but as a platform itself.

And it has been designed to be compatible with multiple software titles for Nintendo platforms.

In other words, the figurines, which consumers can buy and collect, are going to work with multiple software titles to be released in the future, and we are aiming to develop more software titles compatible with the figurines.

Nintendo has a lot of well-known character IP that has originated in video games, and we have been regularly releasing titles from game franchises that make use of this character IP. This is why I believe a brand-new type of platform will be born when the character IP becomes compatible with NFP.

NFP has a writer function as well as a reader function, so it can not only tell what character figurine is on the Wii U GamePad, but also a compact amount of data unique to each game can be written into it and read from it. That is to say, you will be able to customize your NFP to raise or train your own Nintendo characters, for example.

At E3 to be held in L.A. this June, we will announce which titles are compatible with NFP, display NFP products and disclose more specific information about NFP, which will be launched during this year-end sales season.

Currently, Wii U is the only video game platform with a built-in NFC reader/writer function. However, I understand that some of you may be worried that the market for NFP, a platform that will work with a number of software titles, will not grow large enough when it is compatible only with Wii U. If we can make a good use of Nintendo 3DS, which has already sold over 43 million units, however, this assumption will greatly change.

Nintendo has been developing an NFC reader/writer for the Nintendo 3DS family, as you can see on this slide, and we are planning to launch it in the first half of the next calendar year. This will make Nintendo 3DS compatible with the NFC reader/writer via infrared communication, and as a result, you will be able to read and write NFC data with the Nintendo 3DS device in the palm of your hand. That is to say, NFP is going to be compatible with Wii U software from this year-end, and compatible with both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS software from next year.

With the launch of this new product genre, NFP, which will be compatible with Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, is going to serve as the first example of actively utilizing our own character IP.

At the same time, there are not only going to be decorative boxes for video game hardware and packages for software, but also Nintendo character figurines displayed on store shelves. This will provide exposure for Nintendo, play a great role in raising our brand awareness and create more opportunities for consumers to play video games.
